In Memoriam of Peter Spence Morrell

01/05/2025

Peter Morrell was a true gentle-man. The middle of three sons of a Yorkshire father and German mother, he read economics at Jesus College, Cambridge where he made friends who were with him for life. Leaving university he worked for Lazard Brothers in London, then joined the Association of European Airlines in Brussels. This set the tone for the rest of his working life as an air transport consultant and then, from 1991, working in Cranfield University’s Department of Air Transport until he retired. A man who wore his achievements lightly, he advised Ethiopian Airlines, the Thai Civil Aviation Department and Air Jamaica amongst others. His understanding of the finance world in aviation was appreciated by hundreds of students at Cranfield. Friends and family knew him as a modest man with a wry sense of humour. He had an insatiable appetite for swimming – started with his father in Hampstead ponds and finishing with the sea in Devon. At times he sailed; walked his dog (Sasha); kept bees, chickens, pigs and a house cow; punted the Cam (and swam in it!); played the cello; and visited cousins in Germany and USA. He was a Trustee of the York Conservation Trust for over 50 years continuing the family involvement in an organisation his grandfather had begun. I feel privileged to have shared his life since 2002 and his death from Lewy Body Dementia leaves an un-fillable gap for his family and friends. Peter Spence Morrell 1946 – 2025
