Understanding Lewy body dementia

Lewy body dementia refers to both ‘Dementia with Lewy bodies’ and ‘Parkinson’s dementia’. They are caused by the same disease process and are distinguished by the timing of the onset of symptoms.

The main features or symptoms of Lewy body dementia include:

cognitive impairment, visual hallucinations, fluctuations in attention, REM sleep disturbance and Parkinson’s symptoms.

Changes in memory are not always present earlier in the condition.

We are here to support your Lewy body dementia journey

We have made it our mission to educate the public, decision-makers, researchers and the medical profession about the reality of Lewy body dementia and its impact on families. We have curated a library of high-informative resources and a directory of useful organisations in the dementia community.

A recent study found that approximately half of people with Lewy body dementia were given another diagnosis first. It is frequently mistaken for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s or other condition but an accurate diagnosis is essential for the correct treatment to be given.
